Conspiracies

OK…here’s where the rubber meets the road for me on this blog. Breaking events I’d love to comment on in Facebook, but FB really isn’t designed for anything beyond Twitter-like posts…

I [sarcasm]love[/sarcasm] the way the conspiracy theories were flying in the Boston Marathon bombing before anybody really knew any facts. The Facebook wires were burning up with “It’s an inside job!”; “Government plot to scare the people into surrendering more of their rights in the name of safety!”

What evidence was there of any of this? Oh, yeah…I forgot…lack of evidence is a sure sign of conspiracy. Oh…and the most tenuous of coincidental circumstances. Because the government…which we say can’t find it’s butt with both hands…is sooooo expert at covering it’s tracks in such a complex operation. The only evidence of conspiracy here is a belief that Government is so evil they will stop at nothing to throw all of its citizens into thralldom.

Look…I think the government intrudes upon our lives too much. Government should be smaller. But this seeing a conspiracy under every rock does not help our case, friends. I am amazed that people who can construct well reasoned arguments and look for evidence in every other area of life just fold over this because of their presuppositions. (Expect to hear a lot more about presuppositions on this blog. 🙂 )

One question I could not get an answer to from some friends who jumped onto the conspiracy bus…”assuming for minute that he has done everything he is suspected of…and I know that’s a stretch for you at the moment, but just for the sake of discussion…how would you suggest apprehending him?”

The only answer I could get was “apprehend him quietly”. OK…how do you do that with a guy on the run with access to explosives and the willingness to use them? How do you keep him from moving without a general lock down? If this guy slips through and escapes, how do you face the public when he blows something else up?

I’m sure there are a lot of details in this case that we still don’t know. I’m sure the cops might do some things different in hindsight. But the reality is that they had to deal with a dangerous guy on the run before he could do any more bad things. In cases like this, decisions need to be made now. Patton said something to the effect of “A good plan in time is better than a perfect plan too late.”

Oh, yeah. I forgot. He wasn’t necessarily a dangerous guy. His mom said so.
